In the province of Caltanisetta there is the first biomethane plant from OFMSW realized in Sicily. The innovative Enersi Sicily plant will treat 36,000 t per year of organic waste (wet and green) and will produce 400 Sm³/h of biomethane for transport, to be fed into the national natural gas network. A total of 3.6 mln Sm³/a of advanced biomethane, which is equivalent to almost 64 mln km that can be covered in a year by methane vehicles. With these quantities it is possible to feed about 2550 cars per year, with a saving of 2,800 t of equivalent oil, thus avoiding the release into the atmosphere of 7,349 t of fossil CO2 per year. All the digestate will be recovered to produce compost – by weight about 25-30% of the treated waste – classified as a “mixed compost soil improver” that can be used in agriculture.

The future is biomethane
Biomethane is a biogas derived gas, which has undergone a refining and purification process, called upgrading, whose concentration of CH4 exceeds 98%. It has characteristics and conditions of use corresponding to those of methane gas and is suitable for feeding the natural gas network.
The biogas, desulphurised and dehumidified, undergoes a purification process, in order to separate the methane from the other gases that make up the biogas mixture. The biomethane obtained can be used, marketed and transported, in gaseous or liquefied form, in the same way as natural gas.
The advantages of biomethane
